Government To Loan Dredge To New Bern By H. E. C. BRYANT WASHINGTON, Jan. 13.—Senator Simmons has the following letter from General Lansing H. Beach: “Permit me to refer to your letter of January 8, 1923, and to my reply of January 10 in regard to the loan of a government dredge to the city of New Bern for a short period. “I take pleasure in informing you that the application of the city for the loan of the dredge has been received and that the loan has been duly au thorized.” ■ Some people seem to expect summer every winter and winter every sum mer. •9 Obituary Mrs. A, S. Storrs, of Montreat, was killed Monday, January 7, at the Bel mont railway crossing, two mi'ps ssst of Statesville, N. C., about 4 p. m.,. when the car in which Bhe Wiis riding along with her husband crashed into westbound passenger train No. 21. Mr. Storrs, though thrown perhaps 25 feet by the force of the impact, escaped with minor injuries to his face. He was brought directly from the scene of the accident to Long's sanitarium in an automobile^ which was closely fol lowing behind his own. The train ,wos stopped and backed up to the crossing, where Mrs. Storrs was paaced aboard and brought to the station. An am bulance was on hand to rush her to the sanitarium, but life was already extinct upon her arrival there. The crossing at Belmont is a Very dangerous one for traffic from the east, the road making a right angle curve a short distance from the cross ing. The track at this polnt^emergoa from a defile. Mr. Storrs says tie did not see the train until he was right on it, and did not hear the bell or whistle of. the locomotive. Engineer R. L. James stated that the car struck the cab pf his locomotive broads’de, tear ing off the step. The car was demol ished. Mrs. Storrs, according to wit nesses, was thrown fully 35 feet. Mrs. Storrs was 33 years old, a daughter of Mr. James H. Colvin, of Pender county, North Carolina. She had Been twiee married, a son by ber first marriage, James Moore, 11, ar rived in Statesville Tuesday with Rev. George W. Belk, of Montreal their pastor, and- Miss Colvin, her aunt, who reared lier. -The body was brought to Richmond, Va., for interment. Mr. and Mrs. Storrs left Montreat a week ago, going to Richmond to visit his mother, who is ill. A telegram sent Rev. Mr. Belk from Greensboro, stated they intended to reach Montreat Monday evening about 8 o’clock. Rev. Mr. Belk remarked that word of the | accident came as a great shock, for, the Storrs were his neighbors and that' he was devoted to them. They made their home at Monireat in the win ter, summering at Linville City, Mr. Storrs bfelng secretary and treasurer of the Linville Lumber company. On arrival in Richmond the body was taken to the home of Mr. Storrs' mother, Mrs. R. W. Storrs, ■ and the funeral services were held in Emanuel Protestant Episcopal church in Hen rico county. The services were con ducted by Dr, W. D. Reynolds, of Ko rea, and Re* G. Freeland Peter, of Richmond, Va. ■ She was burled in the family section of the Storrs’ at Eman uel church. The pallbearers were Mr. Robert Lancaster, John B. Mo: decal, Hugh Lewis and Sidney EUerson. Diver1 Seeks Gang’s Victims if MM—— ■' -" J. D. The men disappeared following their .kidnaping by a hooded gang, and later their bodies were brought to the surface of the lake by a dynamite blast.
